Monday Reader—The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

This week's Monday Reader isn't a technical book, but I'd recommend all developers and support people read all the Sherlock Holmes novels. Not only are the collections of short stories fun and light night time reads, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has a way of encouraging the reader to be more logical and insightful in his or her thinking:

To carry the art, however, to its highest pitch, it is necessary that the reasoner should be able to utilise all the facts which have come to his knowledge; and this in itself implies, as you will readily see, a possession of all knowledge, which, even in these days of free education and encyclopaedias, is a somewhat rare accomplishment. It is not so impossible, however, that a man should posses all knowledge which is likely to be useful to him in his work, and this I have endeavoured in my case to do. … a man should keep his little brain-attic stocked with all the furniture that he is likely to use, and the rest he can put away in the lumbar-room of his library, where he can get it if he wants it.
Being out of copyright, you can get these for free in iBooks or elsewhere, but I prefer to read paper books—which I can then put away in the lumbar-room of my library :).

Monday Reader–Points of View (a tribute to Alan Kay)

Points of View is a collection of essays written to celebrate Alan Kay's 70th birthday last year. Some are descriptions of some of Alan's great ideas and impact on computer science, some are historical anecdotes and plenty in between. I am just picking this back up after getting half way through when it was first released online and am pleasantly surprised that there is a second printing available.

It's a privilege to read some of the authors of the essays, let alone learn more about Alan's life and work. A must read for anyone serious about the computer profession!
